Was this where they said goodbye? The air around Ichinen-ji Temple, also known as the 一念寺, seems to hum with unspoken farewells. It’s said that disciples of Honen, the founder of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, bid their final farewells to their revered master here. This was back in 1207, as Honen faced exile to Tosa. Today, the poignant memory lingers, adding a layer of melancholy to the serene atmosphere of 一念寺. The temple itself predates Honen’s exile. Originally founded in 674 by Michiaki of the Hosso sect, it served as a beacon of Buddhist teachings long before its connection to Honen. It wasn’t until the Muromachi period (1336-1573) that it found new life, transitioning to the Jodo sect and embracing Honen’s legacy. Step inside the temple, and you’ll find a tangible piece of history: a magnificent 2.18-meter-tall seated statue of Amida Nyorai. This statue, a designated cultural property, is believed to have been brought here from Todaiji Temple. As you stand before this imposing figure, imagine the generations of Jodo sect followers who sought solace and guidance in its presence. The spirit of Honen might be long gone, but his teachings and the echoes of those heartfelt goodbyes continue to resonate within the peaceful grounds of 一念寺.
