Hidden within Milan’s bustling heart lies Santa Maria Vecchia a church whose story echoes through centuries. Its very existence is a testament to resilience. Santa Maria Vecchia wasn’t always known by this name. It began life as Santa Maria alle Case Rotte. This name a clue to its humble beginnings. It was built on the ruins of the Della Torre family’s palace. Matteo Visconti had demolished the palace after defeating the Della Torre family. This violent act paved the way for something new.

Construction of Santa Maria Vecchia began on September 7 1381. Regina Della Scala wife of Milan’s Lord Bernabò Visconti initiated the project. The archbishop of Milan and the Visconti court attended the groundbreaking ceremony. It was a grand affair celebrating the birth of a new church. Regina Della Scala oversaw the project until her death in 1384. Her husband ensured its completion. The church was consecrated in 1385.

The church was built in the Lombard Gothic style. It was divided into three naves. Four pairs of pillars supported its vaults. The facade was gabled with three sections matching the interior’s layout. A large rose window lit the central nave. Smaller rose windows flanked it. The church’s orientation followed the path of the current Via Manzoni. Its seven buttresses reinforced its structure. A polygonal bell tower stood tall. Its windows mirroring the design of the church’s facade.

In the 16th century the church underwent a transformation. The apse was rebuilt with polygonal architecture. This expansion accommodated a stunning inlaid wooden choir. Completed in 1560 this choir is a remarkable survivor. It was transferred to the nearby San Fedele church before Santa Maria Vecchia’s demolition. This exquisite horseshoe-shaped choir echoes the original apse’s form.

Santa Maria Vecchia’s story sadly ends in demolition. In 1776 Empress Maria Theresa approved its destruction. The Teatro alla Scala a new theater was built in its place. The theater’s name serves as a poignant reminder of the church’s existence. The decision was likely influenced by the church’s structural instability. A nearby stream further weakened its foundations. Before the demolition valuable works of art were salvaged. A fresco of the Virgin and Child along with other paintings and sculptures were moved to San Fedele church. Elements also found a new home in the Sforza Castle Museum.

Today there is no trace of Santa Maria Vecchia. Only its name remains echoing in the heart of Milan’s bustling streets. However its legacy lives on in the art it gifted to other Milanese churches. The church’s story is a reminder of the cyclical nature of urban development. It is a tale of creation transformation and ultimately loss. Yet the spirit of Santa Maria Vecchia lingers a testament to its enduring presence in the heart of Milan.
