A symphony of steel and concrete, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link stands before us. Have you ever wondered how such a colossal structure came to be? This isn’t just any bridge. It is a testament to human ingenuity and determination.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is a bridge-tunnel system. It connects Shenzhen and Zhongshan. These are two major cities in the Pearl River Delta. Think of it as a vital artery. It facilitates movement across this bustling region.

The idea for the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link arose from a need to improve connectivity. Shenzhen wanted to be part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project. But it was left out. So, the city proposed a separate link to Zhongshan in 2008. It was initially shelved. Concerns arose it could jeopardize the success of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. Eventually, it was included in Guangdong’s 12th five-year plan.

Construction started in May 2017. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link opened on June 30, 2024. The project cost around US$4.83 billion. That is a significant investment. It demonstrates China’s commitment to infrastructure development.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is about 49.7 kilometers long. It features a 6.7 km tunnel on the Shenzhen side. There are 19 bridges totaling 43 km. The longest continuous bridge section stretches about 22.5 km. Approximately 15.5 km of that is above the sea.

This mega-structure boasts eight lanes. Four lanes run in each direction. The maximum speed is 100 km/h. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link connects several expressways. It joins the Guangshen Expressway and the Jihe Expressway on the east side. On the west side, it connects to the Zhongjiang Expressway.

Imagine reducing travel time from Shenzhen to Zhongshan to under 30 minutes. Before the Link, it took two hours. This saves commuters a lot of time.

In its first month, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link saw over 3 million vehicle crossings. This shows how crucial it is for regional transportation. However, some users reported congestion in the early days. Some even had to wait hours. Detours via the Humen Bridge became necessary for some.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link isn’t just about convenience. It has some impressive statistics. It has the largest span for a fully offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. That measures 1,666 meters. Its bridge deck reaches a height of 91 meters. It also features the largest offshore suspension bridge anchor.

Furthermore, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link contains the longest two-way, eight-lane immersed tube tunnel. This spans 5,035 meters. It also boasts the widest underwater steel shell-concrete immersed tube tunnel. That measures up to 55.6 meters.

Safety is a top priority. The tunnel section includes advanced firefighting and smoke exhaust systems. A team of 14 robots constantly patrols the tunnel. They monitor pipes and cables. They can even detect car accidents. Lights along the walls use color-coded systems. Green indicates everything is fine. Red signals emergencies. Yellow to green lights guide people during evacuations.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link isn’t just a bridge-tunnel. It is a symbol. It symbolizes progress. It showcases the ambition to connect and develop the Greater Bay Area. This enhances transportation in the region. It encompasses Hong Kong, Macao, and nine cities in Guangdong Province.
