West China Health School attached to Sichuan University

The West China School of Medicine has a history deeply rooted in the heart of Chengdu. Founded in 1914 by Western missionaries, it was initially named the West China Union University and was a flagship institution, the earliest modern comprehensive university with medical sciences education in China. It stands proudly as a testament to the city’s rich educational and cultural heritage. Standing before the West China School of Medicine, you can almost feel the determination of those early pioneers. The West China School of Medicine was once known for its dual-degree programs where students could earn MDs, DMDs, BAs, and BSs, partnered with the State University of New York. The school even became the first institution in China to teach dentistry. The West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University, is now a thriving academic center that boasts five schools and four affiliated teaching hospitals. These are the West China College of Basic and Forensic Medicine, the West China School of Medicine, the West China College of Stomatology, the West China School of Public Health, and the West China School of Pharmacy. The four teaching hospitals are known for their specialization in comprehensive medical sciences, women and children’s health, dentistry, and occupational disease treatment. Each school and hospital is proudly named after the West China School of Medicine. The West China Hospital, Sichuan University, is the largest hospital in China, and the institution as a whole is sponsored by the Ministry of Education of China.
