Deep within Berlin, the Heizkraftwerk Buch hums with a quiet power. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity, a modern marvel nestled in the district of Buch. Heizkraftwerk Buch isn’t just a power plant. It’s a symbol of Berlin’s commitment to sustainable energy. Originally built in 1974 by Bewag, the Heizkraftwerk Buch started as an oil and gas-powered plant. Today, it stands at the forefront of green energy initiatives. Its 120-meter chimney watches over the city, a silent sentinel of progress. Heizkraftwerk Buch generates both electricity and heat using the principle of combined heat and power. This process maximizes energy efficiency. It’s a bit like using the heat from your oven to warm your kitchen while you bake. The plant boasts a remarkable five megawatts of electrical output. It provides a whopping 130 megawatts of thermal power to warm homes and businesses. Imagine over 10,000 apartments basking in the warmth generated by Heizkraftwerk Buch. Add to that 500 individual facilities, including businesses, schools, and even the Helios Klinikum hospital. All rely on the plant’s eco-friendly heat. Heizkraftwerk Buch is more than just a power plant. It is a key player in Berlin’s pursuit of climate neutrality by 2045. The plant’s power-to-heat system is like a giant kettle. It captures excess renewable energy, like surplus solar power on exceptionally sunny days, and uses it to heat water. This heated water is then stored in two converted oil tanks. These tanks have a combined capacity equivalent to roughly 25,000 bathtubs. When needed, this stored hot water is released into the city’s heating network. Heizkraftwerk Buch even partners with a decommissioned landfill in Schwanebeck. The landfill gas is converted into electricity. The resulting waste heat is then piped three kilometers to the Heizkraftwerk. This provides over 10% of the heating network’s needs. Heizkraftwerk Buch is constantly innovating. In 2021, a new heat pump was installed. It captures waste heat from sources. These include turbine bearings, generators, and the gas compressor. Even low-temperature waste heat (40°C) is boosted to over 65°C. This further reduces the plant’s environmental footprint and heats approximately 500 homes. The heat pump, combined with the power-to-heat system, saves about 620 tons of CO2 annually. Heizkraftwerk Buch represents Berlin’s dedication to a greener future.
