A majestic stone structure stands before you. This is Rock Spring Presbyterian Church. It’s not just a building it’s a piece of Atlanta’s history.

Rock Spring Presbyterian Church has a long and fascinating story. Its origins trace back to 1870. A simple wooden church served the congregation then. Generations of families worshipped there. They were descendants of the original founders.

In 1923 a new church was built. Atlanta architect Charles H Hopson designed it. He used granite from nearby Cheshire Creek. The Tudor Revival style is stunning. Half-timbering and stucco evoke 16th-century England. Hopson later became an elder in the church. His original drawing hangs in the church’s History Room.

The church wasn’t static. Additions were made over the years. An Educational Annex came in 1953. A Recreation Building followed in 1955. The Educational Wing was added in 1964. The Annie Loudermilk Center opened in 2000.

Rock Spring Presbyterian Church gained national recognition. In 1990 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was recognized for its religious significance in Atlanta.

Sadly in 2019 the congregation voted to close the church. The last service was November 17 2019. The church wasn’t abandoned though. Heritage Preparatory School bought it in 2020. They renovated it. The school now occupies the building. They’ve added features such as a beautiful spiral staircase and a balcony library. The former church now serves a new purpose. But its rich history remains a part of Atlanta.
