The year is 1921. A small group of believers gather in a humble storefront at 20th and Cedar Street in Houston. This wasn’t just any gathering. This was the birth of Mount Herman Baptist Church. Mount Herman Baptist Church, affectionately known as “The Mount,” wasn’t always the grand structure it might be today. It began with just seven souls, united by faith and a shared dream. They called themselves the 20th Street Baptist Church. Their first leader, Reverend G.H. Knight, guided them with unwavering faith for three years. Over time, the congregation grew, their spirits yearning for a proper place of worship. Their prayers were answered when Reverend E.H. Young, their third pastor, boldly declared, “If I serve as your pastor, we will buy a place to worship.” And so they did, moving to 2819 W. Walnut Street. With the new location came a new name, reflecting their aspirations for growth – Mount Herman Baptist Church. This marked the beginning of an incredible journey of faith, resilience, and unwavering belief for Mount Herman Baptist Church.
