Hidden in plain sight, Pratocentenaro whispers tales of a Milan long past. Pratocentenaro isn’t a name that rolls off the tongue of every tourist. Yet, this unassuming suburb holds a captivating history. It offers a glimpse into a Milan before the skyscrapers and high fashion. The name itself, Pratocentenaro, likely originates from a “centenario”. This minor official from the Frankish era oversaw a hundred families, a “centena”. Pratocentenaro first appears in historical records in 1078. The document mentions land owned by the Monastery of the Aurora in Prato Centenaro. The area belonged to the Pieve of Bruzzano, a historical ecclesiastical district. In 1618, Pratocentenaro established its own parish, dedicated to San Dionigi. Pratocentenaro was a small village. In 1751, it had 206 inhabitants, which grew to 236 by 1771. By 1805, at the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, the population reached 283. Pratocentenaro briefly became part of Milan during the Napoleonic era, from 1808 to 1816. It regained its independence with the formation of the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom. However, it was later merged with Segnano in 1841. Segnano became part of Greco Milanese in 1863. Finally, in 1923, Pratocentenaro, along with Greco Milanese, was incorporated into Milan. Since then, Pratocentenaro has experienced the same urban and industrial growth as the rest of Milan’s periphery. Today, remnants of its past intertwine with the modern city. It offers a quiet escape from the bustling center, while still echoing with the whispers of its rich history. Pratocentenaro invites you to explore a different side of Milan, a place where the echoes of centuries past linger in the quiet streets.
