In 1864, two brothers, Charles and Frederick Schwamb, purchased a remarkable piece of history: the Old Schwamb Mill. The Old Schwamb Mill, nestled in Arlington, Massachusetts, isn’t just any mill. It proudly holds the title of the oldest continuously-used mill site in the United States. Its story begins long before the Schwamb brothers, stretching back to 1684. Imagine the landscape back then, a nascent colony dotted with mills harnessing the power of Mill Brook. The Old Schwamb Mill’s location was first developed in 1681. A dam was constructed, followed by a grist mill, and later, a sawmill in 1704. The site passed through different hands, even being briefly adapted for spice grinding in 1860 under Henry Woodbridge before a fire led to its reconstruction. The Schwamb brothers transformed this rebuilt mill into a haven for crafting picture frames. They specialized in circular and elliptical frames. The mill, with its additions built between 1869 and the late 1880s, remained a family affair. They continued their craft, largely unchanged in both equipment and method, for over a century, until 1969. The Old Schwamb Mill stands as a testament to their dedication. Today, the Old Schwamb Mill is a living history museum. It’s a time capsule preserving the ingenuity of the past. Within its walls, you can witness operational equipment and four preserved power systems, a tangible link to the mill’s industrious past. The rhythmic hum of machinery, once a daily soundtrack for generations of Schwambs, now echoes for visitors who come to learn about this unique piece of American history.
