How many stories does this magnificent structure hold? Right before you stands the Viaducto de Segovia a testament to Madrid’s enduring spirit. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a living record of architectural ambition and urban evolution.

Imagine the steep valley it spans. The original narrow street called Calle de Segovia cut through a deep ravine. This presented a significant challenge. People struggled to move between the elevated Alcázar Palace and the lower Vistillas district. This was particularly difficult in the reign of King Felipe II. This is where our story begins. The need for a better connection was apparent.

Early plans for a viaduct emerged. One ambitious design from 1736 by Italian architect Juan Bautista Sachetti was sadly never built. But the idea persisted. In the early 1870s an ambitious project to remodel a large section of the city resulted in a grand iron and wood bridge. It opened in 1874. The engineer was Eugenio Barrón Avignón. This first viaduct was a marvel. It boasted a 120-meter length. Its 13-meter width was impressive. It crossed Calle de Segovia at a height of 23 meters. It could hold 400 kg per square meter. Yet it was short-lived. By 1931 the viaduct was in disrepair.

A competition was launched. This competition produced a design that exemplified the rationalist style. The winning architects were Francisco Javier Ferrero Llusiá. The winning engineers were Luis Aldaz Muguiro and José de Juan-Aracil y Segura. This second viaduct. Its construction utilized polished reinforced concrete with granite base pillars. This was completed in 1934. However the Spanish Civil War damaged it significantly. It required reconstruction. Its reopening was in 1942.

By the 1970s increased traffic posed a new threat. Cracks appeared. A thorough structural study led to the third incarnation of the viaduct. It wasn’t replaced. Rather it was meticulously renovated. The height was raised. The span was extended. It was made capable of handling far greater traffic. This was completed between 1977 and 1978.

Today the Viaducto de Segovia stands tall. It connects Calle de Bailén to Calle de Segovia. It provides stunning views. It has even become a backdrop for numerous Spanish films. It is a symbol of Madrid’s resilience. The viaduct’s history reminds us of progress. It shows the constant adaptation to the city’s changing needs. It’s a reminder that even grand designs may need more than one attempt to fully succeed.
