Mexican colonization began in 1839 transforming the landscape. Later Topanga Canyon became a weekend retreat for Hollywood’s elite in the 1920s. Rolling hills and lush vegetation offered privacy and beauty.
The 1960s brought a wave of artists seeking inspiration. Wallace Berman and Neil Young found homes here. Young recorded much of his iconic album After the Gold Rush in his Topanga basement studio. A darker chapter unfolded when Charles Manson lived in Topanga befriending Young and Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys. Tragically the Manson Family’s murderous spree began with the death of Topanga resident Gary Hinman.
Topanga’s natural beauty is undeniable. Topanga Creek the third largest watershed flowing into Santa Monica Bay remains largely undammed a vital habitat for steelhead trout. A 2005 event shook the community. A massive 300-ton boulder tumbled down a hillside blocking Topanga Canyon Boulevard for a week. It disrupted traffic between the San Fernando Valley and Pacific Coast Highway. Controlled explosions were necessary to remove this natural obstacle.
Topanga’s bohemian spirit thrives. Artists musicians and filmmakers call it home. Music festivals including Topanga Days and Topanga Earth Day celebrate the area’s vibrant culture. The Topanga Film Institute holds an annual festival. The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum an outdoor theater founded by a blacklisted actor continues to offer performances.
