A whirlwind of activity surrounds you. You stand in Harvard Square. This isn’t just any square. It’s a place steeped in history a vibrant hub buzzing with life.
Founded in 1630 as Newtowne Harvard Square’s history stretches back centuries. It was initially intended to be the capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The founding of Harvard University in 1636 cemented its academic destiny. But for many years it remained a small academic settlement with few businesses.
Today Harvard Square is a world-renowned destination attracting millions of visitors annually. Students residents and tourists all mingle in this unique blend of old and new. The Square is a commercial center. This area serves both Harvard students and Cambridge residents. It even functions as a regional shopping destination for commuters.
Think of the iconic Harvard Coop a bookstore founded in 1882. Initially managed by students it’s now partnered with Barnes & Noble. It still maintains a student-elected board though. Or perhaps Leavitt & Peirce tobacconists established in 1883. Or Laflamme Barber Shop operating since 1898. These long-standing local businesses offer a charming contrast to the newer national chains.
The Square has been a backdrop for many films too. Parts of *Good Will Hunting* and *The Town* were shot here. The 1969 film *Goodbye Columbus* also features the Square near its conclusion. And don’t forget the NPR show *Car Talk*. Its offices were located in the Abbott Building until 2014. The hosts famously broadcast from “Car Talk Plaza” in Harvard Square. The window of their former office still displays the sign “Dewey Cheetham & Howe” a reference to The Three Stooges.
Street performers too add to the vibrant atmosphere. Tracy Chapman a Tufts University alumna is known to have played here. Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls was a regular as a “living statue”. Igor Fokin a puppeteer also performed here regularly before his death. A bronze statue of his puppet “Doo Doo” stands in Brattle Square as a tribute.
Harvard Square is more than a place it’s an experience. It’s a blend of academic excellence historical significance and modern vibrancy. A place where history unfolds before you with each passing moment. A place you won’t soon forget.
