“A quiet oasis?” you might think, gazing at Gournes today. This peaceful village, nestled on Crete’s northern coast between Kokkini Hani and Kato Gouves, has a vibrant, almost hidden, history. Gournes, meaning “basin” or “reservoir,” was once a network of irrigation systems, remnants of which can still be seen today. A canal winds through the village center, dry in the summer but brimming with water during the winter rains. Imagine Gournes in the late 1950s. A sleepy agricultural village, known for its olive trees and vineyards, suddenly transformed by the arrival of a large American airbase. The population boomed, the hillsides dominated by the base and its radar towers, nicknamed “Mickey Mouse ears.” This bustling era ended in 1993 when the base closed, leaving Gournes to reinvent itself. Today, tourism thrives alongside the traditional Cretan life. The old village houses with their narrow streets still stand, a testament to Gournes’s past. Along the coast, a more modern promenade has emerged, dotted with tavernas, cafes, and small shops. While larger resorts boast long sandy beaches, Gournes offers intimate coves and smaller sandy stretches, some equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, others remaining untouched. The presence of breakwaters hints at the strong meltemi winds that can buffet the coast. Gournes also boasts a unique attraction: the Cretaquarium Thalassokosmos, one of Europe’s finest marine aquariums, built on the site of the former airbase. This modern marvel showcases the diverse marine life of the Mediterranean and Cretan waters. So, while you relax in the tranquil atmosphere of Gournes, remember the layers of history beneath the surface. From ancient Minoan tombs to a bustling American airbase, Gournes has adapted and evolved, creating the charming village you see today.
