Descending upon the sun-kissed shores south of Tijuana, we find ourselves at the heart of Municipio de Playas de Rosarito. A mere 35 minutes from the US border, this vibrant city beckons with its captivating history and lively atmosphere. The Municipio de Playas de Rosarito, officially known as Municipio de Playas de Rosarito, holds a rich tapestry of stories, woven through time from ancient inhabitants to Hollywood glamour. Long before the influx of tourists, the Kumeyaay people, whose ancestors arrived around 3000 BC, called this land Wa-cuatay, meaning “big houses.” Traces of even earlier inhabitants, the Paleo-Indians, date back as far as 10,000 BC.

Municipio de Playas de Rosarito’s coastal location made it a significant point of passage for explorers. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed past these shores in 1542, charting the coastline on his journey from Ensenada to San Diego Bay. Later, in 1788, Dominican priest Luis de Sales redrew the boundary between Alta and Baja California, extending Baja to encompass the Rosarito Arroyo. This event marked a turning point in the region’s history, solidifying its place within Baja California. The 19th century brought the establishment of vast ranches, shaping the landscape and laying the foundation for the city’s future. Don José Manuel Machado received the title to El Rosarito Ranch in 1885, a date now celebrated as Rosarito’s Foundation Day.

The roar of the 1920s ushered in a new era for Municipio de Playas de Rosarito. The Barbachano family transformed the sleepy Rosarito Shores hunting lodge into the iconic Rosarito Beach Hotel. This glamorous destination quickly attracted Hollywood elite seeking refuge from Prohibition. Imagine the likes of Orson Welles, Rita Hayworth, and even a young Britney Spears gracing the halls of this legendary hotel. As the decades passed, Municipio de Playas de Rosarito continued to evolve. The lobster village of Puerto Nuevo emerged in the 1970s and 80s, tantalizing taste buds with its signature dish: lobster, rice, beans, and margaritas.

The official incorporation of Municipio de Playas de Rosarito in 1995, spearheaded by Hugo Torres Chabert, marked a crucial step in its development. This paved the way for significant infrastructure improvements, transforming the city into the vibrant hub we see today. From the bustling shops and restaurants along Boulevard Benito Juárez to the thriving art scene on Boulevard Popotla, Municipio de Playas de Rosarito offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern amenities. Even the shadow of the Titanic looms large here, with scenes from the iconic film shot at the Fox Studios located in the city. As we conclude our journey through the Municipio de Playas de Rosarito, let the echoes of its vibrant past resonate within you. From ancient settlements to Hollywood hideaways, this coastal city has etched its mark on the sands of time.
