At 83 Beals Street, a modest home holds monumental memories. This is the John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site, the birthplace and childhood home of the 35th US President. John F. Kennedy, or Jack as his family called him, began his life within these walls. The house stands as a testament to the early years of a man who would shape the course of the 20th century. Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. bought the house in 1914. He was preparing for his marriage to Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald. John, along with his sisters Rosemary and Kathleen, were born in the upstairs master bedroom. The family resided here until 1920. The growing family then moved to a larger house nearby. The John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site offers a glimpse into their life. The house, restored by Rose Kennedy, reflects its appearance from 1917. About 19% of the items inside are original to the Kennedy family. Some were used in this house. Others were from later homes and returned during the restoration. The living room, or parlor, served as both a formal entertaining space and a family relaxation area. The piano, an original piece and a wedding gift to Rose, holds a prominent place in the room. The dining room boasts the most complete collection of Kennedy artifacts, including Rose’s wedding china. Lively discussions about history, politics, and current events filled this room during family meals. Upstairs, the master bedroom witnessed the births of three Kennedy children. John F. Kennedy was born here at 3:00 pm on May 29, 1917. Nearby, the nursery houses the bassinet and christening gown used by all nine Kennedy children, alongside Jack’s favorite childhood books. Rose Kennedy’s boudoir served as her private space and office. She meticulously documented her children’s milestones on index cards. Jack’s card remains on display. The kitchen, a modern space for its time, featured a combined coal and gas stove, an electric toaster, and a large icebox. This was the domain of the household servants. The third floor, not part of the tour, housed the servants’ quarters and now serves as the park’s administrative offices. The John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site offers a captivating journey into the early life of an American icon. The house whispers stories of family, ambition, and the formative years of a future president.
