Hidden amidst the bustling streets of Sakai City, Hounzenji Temple awaits. This Obaku sect temple, nestled on Mount Daiho, offers a serene escape. Founded in 1672 by Zen Master Domyo Egoku, Hounzenji Temple boasts a rich history. The temple grounds are a testament to the original architecture. Structures like the Sanmon Gate, Tennoden Hall, and the main hall, Daiyuhoden Hall, stand as reminders of the temple’s origins. Within Daiyuhoden Hall, a staggering 3,333 statues are enshrined. These represent 1,111 statues each of Shaka Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai, and Amida Nyorai. Hounzenji Temple also hosts captivating events. Every August 15th, the Daisegaki Hoe and Manto-e ceremonies illuminate the grounds with approximately 1,000 lanterns. In late April, the temple grounds transform into a vibrant spectacle as azaleas bloom, attracting about 1,000 visitors daily. Hounzenji Temple is more than just a place of worship.
