A century of faith. That’s what this unassuming building in Atwater Village whispers. Welcome to Holy Trinity Church in Los Angeles.

Established in 1925 by Archbishop John Cantwell this church has witnessed a century of devotion. Its first home wasn’t a grand structure. It was a rented house on Atwater Avenue. Mass was even held in a vacant store on Glendale Boulevard. Parishioners built a simple portable altar. The Knights of Columbus from Glendale provided chairs.

The current church building which seats 350 opened later. It has endured challenges. A 1948 fire damaged the sanctuary. The entire interior needed renovation. Smoke damage was extensive. The church rebuilt. It’s now a testament to resilience.

Holy Trinity School opened in 1949. Initially it was in the parish hall. Four classrooms were created. The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart ran it. It later moved. A larger two-story school was built. The Felician Sisters took over. The school expanded. It even operated on two campuses for a while.

The church’s history includes numerous renovations. These were made possible by generous parishioners. The parking lot was repaved. A new sound system was installed. Carpets and confessionals were replaced. Statues were restored. The rectory was updated. Even the exterior was repainted. A beautiful stained-glass window was added above the choir loft.

Despite these upgrades some original features remain. The hanging lamps and windows are from 1925. The original altar and pews’ designs inspired later replacements. Some statues also keep their original locations.

Holy Trinity Church hasn’t just weathered the storms. It’s adapted and thrived. It embraced technology. It introduced live-streaming. It endured a pandemic. It expanded its outreach. This neighborhood church stands as a beacon of faith. It is a place of community. It’s a testament to lasting devotion. This is Holy Trinity. A small church with a big heart. A living legacy. A place where history continues.
