A forgotten jewel. That’s what Castello di Macconago is. It stands before you a testament to Milan’s rich past. This isn’t the flashy Castello Sforzesco. This is older more intimate. Built between 1330 and 1340 it’s Milan’s first castle. The Castello di Macconago was initially owned by the Pusterla family. Their coat of arms still adorns the two main entrances. But the family fell out of favor with the Visconti. The castle’s fortunes declined. It fell into disrepair. Over the centuries the Castello di Macconago changed hands. The Vimercati family owned it then the Calchi the Marliani the Ferrario the Tarlaini the Greppi and finally the Gavana. They are the current owners.

The Castello di Macconago is a classic Visconti castle. It’s square with watchtowers and crenellated walkways. It’s had many additions over the years. But the original 14th-century structure is still visible in the basement. The castle boasts three floors. Inside you’ll find traces of Renaissance graffiti. The ground floor houses historic stables with cross and barrel vaults. A beautiful 15th-century portal and a large fireplace are also noteworthy. Imagine the lives lived within these walls. The feasts the arguments the secrets whispered.

Despite its transformations the Castello di Macconago retains its charm. It is a quieter more secluded castle. It is tucked away on the southern outskirts of Milan. It’s surrounded by cultivated fields a peaceful contrast to the city’s bustle. Unfortunately the 18th-century church across from it is now abandoned. This adds to the castle’s slightly melancholic beauty. The Castello di Macconago is a hidden gem. It offers a glimpse into Milan’s less-known history. It’s a story waiting to be rediscovered. A place where the echoes of centuries past still resonate. Today the Castello di Macconago is privately owned. It is not open to the public. But its presence alone speaks volumes.
