A phoenix from the ashes. That’s one way to describe the Gymnasium Langenhorn. It has two separate lives in Langenhorn. The original Gymnasium Langenhorn was founded in 1966. It first occupied the Fritz-Schumacher-Schule building. This was on Timmerloh street.
In 1969, the Gymnasium Langenhorn moved. It found a new home on Foorthkamp 36. For many years, the Gymnasium Langenhorn served its community. But all things must pass.
The Gymnasium Langenhorn closed at the end of the 2007/2008 school year. Students in middle school transferred to Gymnasium Hummelsbüttel. The Foorthkamp location became the Oberstufe Langenhorn. This was a joint upper school for two local schools. These were the Fritz-Schumacher-Stadtteilschule and the Stadtteilschule am Heidberg.
The buildings at Foorthkamp have quite a history. They were built in 1969. The Hochbauamt designed them. In the early 1970s, civil defense shelters were added. These shelters had space for 288 people.
In 2016, the Oberstufe Langenhorn added a Selbstlernzentrum. This is a self-learning center. It provided students with laptops and a library. The learning center offered quiet study spaces. There were group and individual areas. The building project cost 570,000 €. Around the same time, the Fachklassenhaus was renovated. That cost 2.1 million €. The entrance area was renovated in 2017. This cost 1.4 million €.
In 2019, the Oberstufe Langenhorn included several buildings. There was the renovated entrance building. There was also a renovated specialist building. The new Selbstlernzentrum was a highlight. Five classroom buildings remained unsanitized. The Seitzhalle sports hall was also unsanitized.
But the story of the Gymnasium Langenhorn does not end there. In 2023, a new Gymnasium Langenhorn opened. It is located on Grellkamp. This is the site of the former Grellkamp school. The new school carries the same name.
The new Gymnasium Langenhorn is an open all-day school. It has a growing student population. It has about 190 students. The school offers English from year 5. Spanish and Italian are available from year 6. Students can prepare for language certificates. These include the Cambridge Certificate for English. They can also get the DELE for Spanish.
So, the Gymnasium Langenhorn has had two distinct chapters. The first ended in 2008. The second began in 2023. The spirit of education continues. It is alive and well in Langenhorn.
