In the heart of Los Angeles, a beacon of faith and resilience stands tall: the Good Samaritan Baptist Church. The Good Samaritan Baptist Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the power of community, a stage where history has unfolded, and a symbol of hope amidst the city’s vibrant tapestry. Let’s journey back to 1885, a time when Los Angeles was still finding its footing. In this era, a small haven of healing emerged: Good Samaritan Hospital, initially established with just nine beds. This hospital, closely associated with the Good Samaritan Baptist Church, would become a cornerstone of the community, growing in tandem with the burgeoning city. The hospital’s initial location on Orange Street, a then-residential area, placed it next to a notable figure: Clara Shatto. Her Victorian-style home stood as a neighbor to the growing hospital, and her generous land donation a mile west would eventually birth Lafayette Park. As Los Angeles continued its transformation, Orange Street expanded and was renamed Wilshire Boulevard. The Good Samaritan Hospital, ever adaptable, embraced the change and expanded along with it. New buildings sprouted in 1927 and 1953, showcasing a mix of architectural styles that reflected the city’s evolving aesthetic. The Good Samaritan Hospital’s story, intertwined with that of the Good Samaritan Baptist Church, took a somber turn in June 1968. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, after winning the California Democratic presidential primary at the Ambassador Hotel, was tragically shot just down the street. He was brought to Good Samaritan, where he passed away, forever etching the hospital’s name into the annals of American history. The spirit of progress continued to animate the Good Samaritan community. In 2011, an ambitious $80 million expansion project was unveiled, slated for completion in 2015, further solidifying the hospital and the church’s commitment to serving the people of Los Angeles. The Good Samaritan Baptist Church stands as a symbol of enduring faith, a testament to community resilience, and a quiet witness to the unfolding drama of history in the heart of Los Angeles.
