A grand estate. That’s the first impression of the Castle of Chignolo Po. Its imposing tower stands tall a testament to centuries of history. This magnificent castle isn’t just a building it’s a living museum. It whispers tales of kings and popes. It showcases the opulent world of Lombard and Venetian nobility.

The Castle of Chignolo Po’s story begins around 740 AD. King Liutprand ordered a defensive tower built. This tower controlled a vast stretch of land along the Po River. It protected the ancient Via Francigena the famous pilgrim route. The tower remains today the castle’s oldest part.

Later the castle became a haven for Benedictine monks. It served as a vital shelter along the Via Francigena. Archbishop Sigeric the Serious even designated it as the 40th station on his pilgrimage. This was in 990 on his way back to Canterbury from Rome.

Over the centuries noble families shaped the castle. The Pusterla family ruled it. Then came the Federici and finally the Cusani. Cardinal Agostino Cusani transformed it into an elegant palace. He hired renowned architects and artists. The result was a breathtaking Baroque masterpiece. He even commissioned a hunting lodge inspired by King Vittorio Amedeo II of Savoy’s Stupinigi residence.

The Castle of Chignolo Po became known as the “Versailles of Lombardy”. Popes emperors kings and even Napoleon visited. It hosted lavish events and witnessed significant historical moments.

The Cusani family’s last descendant left the castle in 1936. It became the Sovereign Order of Malta’s representative office. Then in 1987 the Procaccini family acquired it. They restored it carefully preserving its heritage. Today the castle is a private residence. However guided tours allow visitors to admire its beauty.
