How about this: a factory in shipping containers? That’s BioNTech’s innovative approach to mRNA vaccine production right here in Kigali. BioNTech’s facility isn’t just a building. It represents a pivotal step toward vaccine equity and health security for Africa.

The story of BioNTech in Kigali begins with a vision. This vision aimed to decentralize vaccine manufacturing and empower the African Union member states. In December 2023, BioNTech inaugurated its Kigali site. This marked the arrival of the company’s first high-tech modular manufacturing units known as BioNTainers.

These BioNTainers are not your typical factory components. These are cleanrooms inside shipping containers. They are equipped with state-of-the-art manufacturing solutions. Each BioNTainer measures 2.6m x 2.4m x 12m. Two modules span 800m². This setup allows for the bulk production of mRNA vaccines.

What makes BioNTech’s approach so revolutionary? The BioNTainers use a plug-and-play design. Their modular construction with standardized equipment enables rapid setup. This allows a fully functional mRNA manufacturing facility to be established quickly. The Kigali plant also includes vital infrastructure. Power water supply quality control labs warehousing and cold storage are all on site.

BioNTech invested approximately $150 million in this groundbreaking facility. The company expects to begin manufacturing batches of mRNA-based vaccines in 2025. This will happen after specialized personnel receive local training in 2024. The initial production capacity is expected to reach around 50 million doses per year.

BioNTech’s commitment extends beyond COVID-19 vaccines. They also advance vaccine candidates for malaria and tuberculosis. The facility is designed to manufacture a range of mRNA-based vaccines. These vaccines will address the specific needs of African Union member states. BioNTech plans to distribute vaccines manufactured in Rwanda to other African Union members at a not-for-profit price.

This initiative has garnered widespread support. The African Union Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the African Medical Agency have all endorsed BioNTech’s efforts.

BioNTech plans to establish similar factories in Senegal and South Africa. These facilities will form a robust network of end-to-end manufacturing across Africa.

CEPI is committing up to US $145 million to support BioNTech. This will support the establishment of mRNA vaccine R&D clinical and commercial-scale manufacturing capabilities at the Company’s facility in Kigali Rwanda.

BioNTech’s facility in Kigali symbolizes innovation collaboration and a commitment to global health equity. It is a beacon of hope for Africa’s future in vaccine development and manufacturing. It aims to produce 60% of the vaccines needed by the continent by 2040. This factory embodies a resilient and sustainable vaccine ecosystem.
