The year was 1891. The granite industry was booming. Hammer Havn became the main shipping point for the stone quarried from nearby Hammerknuden. Imagine the hustle and bustle. Over 300 workers toiling away, loading the heavy granite onto ships destined for faraway lands. The harbor operated this way for over 80 years. Finally, in 1974, the granite industry dwindled. The harbor fell silent. But Hammer Havn was reborn in 2012. A massive investment of over 25 million DKK breathed new life into the area. The harbor was rebuilt. Handsome granite casings now line the marina. Modern amenities like Wi-Fi, electricity, and a slipway are available for visiting yachters. There’s even a popular cafe in a multi-purpose building. Here, you can enjoy a meal and delve into the harbor’s rich history. Hammer Havn is nestled in a magnificent landscape at the foot of Hammershus, Northern Europe’s largest castle ruin. From here, you can explore Slotslyngen and Hammerknuden. You can also visit the new visitor’s center for Hammershus, inspired by world-renowned architect Jørn Utzon. For a truly unique experience, take a boat trip from the harbor. These boats will take you into the breathtaking 70-meter deep caves carved into the nearby bird cliffs.
