Why is Bait Al-Maqham called the “big house”? You might be surprised to learn that this nickname reflects its size. It was one of the largest architectural buildings in 18th-century Bawsher. Bait Al-Maqham is nestled amidst plantations in the suburbs of Bawsher, close to Muscat. This splendid residence offers wonderful views and is tucked away near the city’s last sand dunes. It was built for Sayyida Thuraya bint Muhammad bin Azzan Al Busaidi. But Bait Al-Maqham is more than just a home. Its design incorporates military features, making it a fascinating example of ancient Omani fortification. The northwest tower, for instance, stands at an impressive 16.35 meters high and speaks to the defensive capabilities of the structure. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism recognized its significance and undertook restoration efforts in 1991 and again in 2010. Today, Bait Al-Maqham stands as a testament to Omani architectural prowess and the enduring legacy of a noblewoman named Sayyida Thuraya.
