“A simple pedestrian bridge. Carrying only heating pipes. Could it hold a story?”

Welcome to the Sennoy Bridge a seemingly unassuming structure in the heart of St Petersburg. But this bridge is more than meets the eye. Its history is woven into the very fabric of this city.

The Sennoy Bridge didn’t always look like this. Its first incarnation emerged in 1931. A humble wooden bridge. It served a practical purpose. Its primary function was carrying crucial heating pipes across the Griboyedov Canal. It was named Haymarket Bridge a reflection of the nearby Sennaya Square. This square was once a bustling hay market.

The original bridge was a simple wooden structure. Three girders each composed of three bars. Two heating pipes hung suspended between them. Its lifespan was shorter than one might expect. After only two decades it crumbled under the weight of time and weather.

In 1952 the bridge received a major makeover. Engineer P B Bazhenov masterminded its transformation. The new Sennoy Bridge. An elegant steel structure. It retained its practical function but gained aesthetic appeal. Cast iron railings added a touch of grace to the design. Its length increased to 23 meters. The width however remained modest at 2.3 meters.

The Sennoy Bridge was not just a crossing. It was a vital artery. Connecting Sennaya Square with areas famously associated with Dostoevsky’s Petersburg. The setting of “Crime and Punishment”. Although not present during Dostoevsky’s time. The bridge fits seamlessly into the historical landscape.

The bridge has witnessed numerous repairs and renovations. In 1977 some wooden elements were replaced. A more extensive reconstruction took place between 2017 and 2018. The old bridge was completely dismantled. A new one was built. The architects carefully preserved its architectural appearance. The project hit a snag. During the construction of the pile foundation. The workers unearthed a layer of granite. This unexpected discovery delayed the project until the summer of 2018.

The Sennoy Bridge isn’t just a structure. It is a silent witness. It has seen centuries of change. It still carries on its practical function. Connecting people and communities. It silently stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of St Petersburg.
