A crumbling wall whispers secrets. This is the Sexta Esclusa del Real Canal de Manzanares. Its story isn’t one of grandeur. It is one of resilience and near oblivion.

The Sexta Esclusa was built between 1780 and 1790. It was part of a larger ambitious project. The Real Canal de Manzanares aimed to connect Madrid and Aranjuez. It was a waterway leading to the Tagus River. From there ships could reach the sea. This sixth lock however didn’t receive much attention in historical records. Pascual Madoz described it as old and poorly built. It required repairs like the other eight locks. These repairs were done starting in 1817.

We know more from Madoz’s writings. He mentions the addition of protective structures. These were added to prevent water damage to the canal banks. He notes the existence of a water reservoir. This reservoir distributed irrigation water. An observation tower controlled the water flow. Madoz doesn’t mention the lock keeper’s house. Like the other lock houses it was a single-story building. It included stables for the horses.

Unfortunately the high-speed rail line to Seville destroyed much of the Sexta Esclusa. The lock itself is largely buried. Only the lock keeper’s house remains. It’s in ruins. A later building was added to the house. This has obscured its original form.

In 1823 dredging was necessary. The canal had become clogged with silt. This disrupted navigation. Even today if you look closely you can see parts of the original masonry wall. We uncovered it during our research. It is a testament to the Sexta Esclusa’s enduring presence. Though largely unseen it stands as a reminder of Madrid’s history. It’s a hidden piece of the city’s intricate past. A quiet witness to centuries of change. A legacy that deserves our attention. The Sexta Esclusa is more than just a ruin. It’s a symbol of ambition resilience and ultimately quiet endurance.
