Clutching my grandmother’s hand, I first entered the Sr. Sto. Nino Chapel. The air vibrated with the energy of fervent prayers. This wasn’t just a building. It was a living testament to faith. The image was rediscovered in 1565 by Juan Camus, a sailor in Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s expedition. Found amidst the ruins of a burnt village, the Santo Niño’s survival was seen as a miracle. A chapel, the precursor to the Sr. Sto. Nino Chapel, was built on that very spot. The Sr. Sto. Nino Chapel is also a witness to resilience. During World War II, a bomb struck the Basilica, damaging the roof but miraculously failing to explode. The Santo Niño was found dangling from an electric candle, held by its cape. It’s a powerful symbol of hope and protection. This devotion to the Santo Niño has spread far beyond Cebu. Filipinos around the world celebrate the Feast of the Santo Niño, or Fiesta Señor, on the third Sunday of January. The Sinulog, a vibrant dance festival, is a central part of the celebration.
