A wave of hope. That’s what Neos Kosmos has always represented. From the ashes of the Asia Minor Catastrophe rose a new world a haven for refugees.
Neos Kosmos or New World in English is more than just a neighborhood. It’s a living testament to resilience. It’s a place where history whispers on every corner. Its streets have witnessed the struggles and triumphs of generations.
The area started as farmland. Armenians settled there before 1920. The Asia Minor Catastrophe brought a massive influx of refugees from Turkey. Internal migrants followed. Makeshift shacks transformed the landscape into a labyrinth of slums. The 1954 movie Magic City captured this era. Government-subsidized buildings finally replaced the shacks. Today many of those buildings house descendants of the original refugees and even newer refugees from the Middle East.
Then there’s Stegi the Onassis Cultural Centre. It arrived in 2010 changing the Athenian arts scene forever. It hosted cutting-edge performances and exhibitions. Robert Mapplethorpe’s daring photography exhibition was a highlight. John Malkovich performed sold-out plays. Bernadine Evaristo spoke about feminism and art. The annual Block Party draws huge crowds. Stegi is a strong LGBTQ+ supporter. It even runs an international radio station Stegi Radio.
The Neos Kosmos Theatre is another gem. Housed in a former brewery it stages classic and contemporary productions. The theatre is known for its inclusive work staging performances in homes for the disabled and even a women’s prison.
Lambrakis Hill offers a green escape. Locals call it vounalaki. It has a dog park a children’s playground and a basketball court. It’s even a snow-fight location when Athens experiences its rare snowfall. It’s a stark contrast to the cement landscape it sits within. During World War II it was home to an ammunition depot and military jail.
The EMST the National Museum of Contemporary Art opened in 2020. It’s housed in a post-war building designed by Takis Zenetos. The museum sits on the site of a former Fix Brewery. Its collection includes works by Greek and international artists like Chryssa Danae Stratou and Stephen Antonakos.
