Dobong-gu’s history is deeply rooted in the land. It was carved out of Seongbuk District in 1973. Twenty-two neighborhoods formed its initial identity. By 1979 further subdivisions increased the number to thirty-five. This dynamic growth however wasn’t without its shifts. In 1988 sixteen neighborhoods were transferred to create Nowon District. A year later Dobong-dong and Chang-dong rejoined Dobong-gu. Then in 1995 eighteen more neighborhoods formed the new Gangbuk District leaving Dobong-gu with its current fourteen.
