Across the shimmering Jin River, the Anshun Bridge beckons. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a portal to Chengdu’s vibrant past and present. The Anshun Bridge, or “Bridge of the Peaceful and Fluent”, whispers tales of centuries gone by. Did you know that its story intertwines with the legendary travels of Marco Polo? In the 13th century, he documented several magnificent bridges in China. The Anshun Bridge, then known as Changhong Bridge, stood proudly among them. Imagine Chengdu in 1677. The renovated Anshun Bridge, a two-tiered wooden marvel, connected Da’an Street to Wannianqiao Street. The upper level housed revered deity statues, while below, merchants and townsfolk bustled across the Jin River. The river, however, was a fickle mistress. Floods repeatedly ravaged the Anshun Bridge, leading to reconstructions in 1744 and 1746. Even after the Communist takeover in 1949, the bridge continued to evolve. Rebuilt as a simpler, single-level structure, it served as a vital pedestrian link. Further renovations in 1974 resulted in a new bridge by 1978. Sadly, it succumbed to another devastating flood in 1981. The city needed a sturdier crossing, so the “New Anshun Bridge” was built for vehicles. But the original Anshun Bridge was not forgotten. In 1996, as part of the Fu’nan River restoration project, the damaged old bridge was carefully dismantled. The city commissioned a redesign, envisioning a three-arch replica that honored its history while embracing its future. This marked the rebirth of Anshun Bridge, now known as “Anshun Langqiao”. This new name signified its dual nature: a bridge and a building. It seamlessly blended cultural and commercial functions. The final transformation was completed in 2003. The Anshun Bridge now stands as a testament to Chengdu’s commitment to preserving its heritage while adapting to modern needs. Today, it houses a popular restaurant. It’s a beloved gathering place where the echoes of history mingle with the laughter of diners. The Anshun Bridge is more than just a crossing. It’s a living story, connecting Chengdu’s rich past to its vibrant future.
