“Did you know that hidden in the heart of Kuala Lumpur lies a temple with a fascinating past?” We are standing before the Tokong Poo Meng See. It is a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage. This is the Sin Sze Si Ya Temple.

Let’s step back in time to the early days of Kuala Lumpur. The story of Tokong Poo Meng See begins with Yap Ah Loy. He was a prominent figure credited with establishing Kuala Lumpur.

Yap Ah Loy founded this temple in 1864. It became a place of worship and a symbol of gratitude. The Tokong Poo Meng See is dedicated to two deities. They are Sin Sze Ya and Si Sze Ya. These deities guided Yap Ah Loy during the Selangor Civil War.

These weren’t just any deities. They were based on real people. Sheng Meng Li was a Kapitan from Sungai Ujong. Chung Lai was Yap Ah Loy’s loyal lieutenant. These men played crucial roles in Yap’s success.

Yap Ah Loy deeply respected Sheng Meng Li. Sheng was killed in conflicts over tin mining rights. After his death, Sheng appeared in Yap’s dreams. He promised protection in future battles. Yap Ah Loy carried Sheng’s spirit tablet into battle. He believed it brought him victory.

Chung Lai was also vital to Yap’s success. He helped recapture lost territories. He brought peace to Kuala Lumpur. Together, Sheng Meng Li and Chung Lai became tutelary deities.

The Tokong Poo Meng See we see today was completed in 1883. Yap Ah Loy wanted to honor these men. He donated land and commercial lots for the temple. Before this temple, there was a shrine in Rasah Seremban. Yap moved the deity to Kuala Lumpur.

Inside the Tokong Poo Meng See, you’ll find two deities at the main altar. The one on the right represents Kapitan Shin Kap who is Sheng Meng Li. The effigy on the left might represent Chong Piang. He was Yap Ah Loy’s right-hand man killed in the civil war.

The Tokong Poo Meng See has two entrances. The main entrance faces Jalan Tun HS Lee. A smaller entrance opens to Lorong Bandar 19. This temple stands as a reminder of Kuala Lumpur’s early days.

Devotees flock to the Tokong Poo Meng See during festive occasions. The temple is most crowded on Chinese New Year’s Eve and the first day. People come to pray for good luck. Some believe crawling under the altar table removes bad luck.

Another important day is Jingzhe Day. This day marks the emergence of insects from hibernation. Devotees participate in a ceremony called Da Xiao Ren. It involves villain hitting.

The Tokong Poo Meng See is more than just a temple. It’s a symbol of history, gratitude, and the enduring spirit of Kuala Lumpur. It is the oldest Taoist temple in the city. It links us to the stories of those who shaped this city. Take a moment to appreciate the legacy of Yap Ah Loy. He built this temple to honor those who helped him. Consider the historical figures of Sheng Meng Li and Chung Lai. Their influence shaped Kuala Lumpur. The Tokong Poo Meng See stands as a tribute to their enduring legacy.
