Why do locals call it “Bueng Lam Luk Ka”? Before we explored the bustling streets of Lam Luk Ka District, its name sparked my curiosity. Situated just south of Bangkok, Lam Luk Ka District in Pathum Thani province was once a vast grassland. The area was known as “Thung Luang” meaning “great field”. During King Chulalongkorn’s reign, the Khlong Rangsit canal was built. This brought irrigation and with it, more and more people. The waterways in this area flow into a pond shaped like a crow’s foot. This attracted many birds who nested around the abundant pond. It’s fascinating how the abundance and shape of a simple pond led to the district’s unique name. This is reflected in the numerous crow sculptures adorning buildings and lampposts along the highway. The name remains a reminder of the district’s rich natural past and the transformation it underwent.
