Contemplate the rhythmic creaks of ancient dhows. They are a testament to Sharjah’s profound connection with the sea. We are standing before the Sharjah Maritime Heritage Museum. It is a place where maritime history comes alive.

Sharjah Maritime Heritage Museum opened its doors in 2003. Its goal was to highlight the UAE’s maritime past. It moved to a new location in Al Khan on July 7 2009. The museum shows how the sea shaped Sharjah. It explains why the first residents chose this location. They settled here over 6000 years ago.

Inside the Sharjah Maritime Museum, you will find many artifacts. They showcase Sharjah’s marine history. You’ll see traditional wooden dhows. They once sailed these waters. There are also real Arabian pearl-diving vessels. These include the famed Asamaa, sambuk and Jalbot ships. They were known for their daring exploits.

One highlight is the collection of real Arabian pearls. Ancient inhabitants gathered them from the Gulf. These pearls still have their original luster. Archaeologists discovered a beautiful pearl specimen. It was found in a Sharjah seaside cemetery. This pearl is one of the world’s oldest.

Sharjah Maritime Museum offers insights into scuba diving. You will also discover traditional fishing practices. Learn about historical trading and diving exploits. Fishing tools are on display. One such tool is the “Neezah”. It is an iron piece with three pointed heads. Fishermen used it to catch crab and falcon fish. Another tool is “Al-Mantab”. It is a thick stick with a large hook. It helped to attract large fish.

The sea was fundamental to coastal civilizations like Sharjah. This happened over 6000 years ago. So, the city’s past has good preservation.

Sharjah Maritime Museum offers many facilities. There is WiFi and wheelchair access. ATM service and a parking area are available. There are separate restrooms and a prayer area. A baby-changing table is also available. You can find a library full of books. High-speed elevators are present for easy access.

The museum is open Saturday to Thursday from 8 am to 8 pm. On Fridays, it is open from 4 pm to 10 pm. Admission is AED 5 for children aged 2 to 12. Adults and teenagers over 13 pay AED 10. Children under two enter for free. People over 60 also enter for free.

Take your time as you explore the Sharjah Maritime Museum. Reflect on the stories of those who sailed these seas. Consider their reliance on the ocean’s bounty. Let the exhibits transport you to a time. It was a time when the sea was the lifeblood of Sharjah. This museum preserves and celebrates that vital heritage.
