Look closely at the imposing Ghodbunder Fort. Standing proudly on a hill just south of the Ulhas River, this fort has witnessed centuries of history unfold. Its imposing structure whispers of battles, triumphs, and the changing tides of empires. Built around the 16th century by the Portuguese, it was strategically placed to control the busy Ghodbunder Road, a vital trade route that connected Mumbai to the heartland of Maharashtra. The Portuguese named it ‘Cacabe de Tanna’ and used it as a military stronghold, showcasing their dominance in the region.

The fort played a crucial role in the Portuguese Empire, as it was a hub for trade. They would trade horses with the Arabs at the port nearby. The word ‘Ghodbunder’ itself comes from the Marathi words ‘ghode’ (horses) and ‘bunder’ (port). The Portuguese control of the fort was not unchallenged, as the Maratha Empire, led by the legendary Shivaji Maharaj, sought to wrestle back the region. The fort was repeatedly besieged by the Maratha forces, but the Portuguese managed to defend it for many years. Ultimately, in 1737, the Marathas, under the command of the formidable Chimaji Appa, finally captured the fort. They strengthened its defenses, initiating the construction of a majestic tower that still stands today.

Later, in 1818, the British East India Company seized the fort and made it the headquarters of the district administrative, a testament to their growing influence in the region. The fort has seen its share of glory, but sadly, today, only ruins remain. Despite this, its historical significance, as a symbol of battles and power, it continues to hold a special place in the lives of people in the region. Although Ghodbunder Fort stands as a silent sentinel of the past, its story continues to live on through the echoes of its past, reminding us of the battles that forged its legacy.
