Gazing up at Sankt Johannis, did you notice the tower? It wasn’t always there. For centuries, Sankt Johannis, Flensburg’s oldest church, relied on a simple wooden bell tower beside the main building. The current baroque tower wasn’t added until 1741. Sankt Johannis has witnessed Flensburg’s transformation from a small fishing village to a bustling port city. Its history is intertwined with the city’s, going back to its legendary founding in 1128. This church, dedicated to John the Apostle, was likely an offshoot of another Johanniskirche in nearby Adelby. Even before Flensburg gained its town charter, Sankt Johannis hinted at the growing importance of this area. Its size surpasses other nearby churches, suggesting the early significance of Flensburg’s oldest settlement. Step inside Sankt Johannis, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by centuries of stories. The Romanesque core is still visible, despite Gothic-era additions like larger windows and an extended choir made of brick. Look up at the late Gothic vault, a masterpiece from the 15th century. Admire the vibrant frescoes, painted by Peter Lykt, depicting a Garden of Eden. At the vault’s center, a dramatic scene of the Last Judgment unfolds. These frescoes, whitewashed in 1734 and rediscovered in 1910, have been meticulously restored, capturing their original color and design. The scars of time, from damage in 1481 and 1513, remain untouched, whispers of the past. The church houses treasures like the wooden statue of John the Baptist, carved around 1500. The pulpit, crafted by Johan von Bremen in 1587, portrays key biblical scenes from the Fall to the Last Judgment. It’s a visual representation of Luther’s doctrine of justification. The baptismal font, from 1592, features figures symbolizing the four Evangelists. And the altar, a 1734 creation by local artisans, showcases the Last Supper. Sankt Johannis isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a living testament to the faith and resilience of the community it has served for over 800 years.
