From the depths of Opalsøen a story unfolds. Before you lies not just a lake but a chapter in Bornholm’s industrial past. Opalsøen wasn’t always a shimmering expanse of water. From the mid-1800s until 1970 this place was a bustling granite quarry. Bornholm’s granite was highly sought after a vital export good. Opalsøen was at the heart of this boom. Danish and German owners operated the quarry. Granite was shipped from the nearby Hammerhavn also known as Sæne Havn.

Imagine the sounds of blasting the clatter of machinery the shouts of workers. The granite was extracted in stages each level about 22 meters deep. The exact depth of the quarry remains a mystery. However rappelling activities suggest a depth of around 43 meters. Adding the lake’s depth of approximately 10 meters and the distance from the edge to the water’s surface the total depth could be around 70 meters.

When the quarry closed nature took over. The hole gradually filled with water creating Opalsøen. Legend says an old excavator still rests at the bottom a relic of the granite age. This hasn’t been confirmed. But it adds to the mystery of this unique location. Today Opalsøen offers more than just stunning views. It’s a haven for activities. People enjoy swimming cliff jumping and ziplining.

The zipline stretching over 290 meters is one of Denmark’s longest. The thrill of soaring through the air reaching speeds up to 70 kilometers per hour before splashing into Opalsøen is unforgettable. From the cliffs surrounding Opalsøen you have a breathtaking view. You can see the Baltic Sea and even the Hammershus castle ruin.
