First in Japan. That’s the claim to fame for Otsu IC/SA. Specifically, the Meishin Expressway opened in July 1963 as Japan’s first high-speed road. Then, Otsu Service Area was established on October 1 of the same year as Japan’s first service area.
Otsu IC/SA offers travelers respite. It also provides stunning views of Lake Biwa. This is Japan’s largest lake.

Otsu thrived as a post station on the Tokaido highway during the Edo period. This highway connected Edo which is now Tokyo to Kyoto. Travelers often brought back omiyage which are gifts for family and friends.
One unique souvenir was the Otsu-e. These are simple paintings on paper with popular themes. They originated in the 1620s. Initially, most paintings were Buddhist in nature. Later, artists created humorous works. They depicted demons, beauties and animals.
Even today, Otsu maintains sister city relationships. Lansing, Michigan is one of them. Both are capitals of their respective regions.
