In the 1930s, a unique haven for writers emerged just southwest of Moscow: Peredelkino. Peredelkino wasn’t just a collection of dachas. It was a vibrant writers’ colony, a place where literary giants like Boris Pasternak and Korney Chukovsky could escape the city’s bustle and find inspiration. Imagine strolling through this village, the air thick with creativity. Peredelkino pulsed with the energy of some of the 20th century’s most brilliant minds. Boris Pasternak, author of “Doctor Zhivago,” called Peredelkino home from 1939 until his death in 1960. It was within the walls of his modest dacha that he completed “Doctor Zhivago” and learned of his Nobel Prize in Literature. The house remains much as he left it. A simple interior, his father Leonid’s paintings adorning the walls, his coat still on the hook, and even his shoes by the door offer a glimpse into his life. The museum encourages music, hoping to fill the house with the same melodies that once inspired Pasternak. You might even be allowed to play the original Pasternak family piano. But Peredelkino was home to more than just Pasternak. Korney Chukovsky, the beloved children’s poet, also had a dacha here. His whimsical rhymes and fantastical characters, often compared to Dr. Seuss, delighted generations of children. His museum is a testament to his enduring legacy. The Patriarch’s Residence, a grand complex with churches, gardens, and a palace, adds another layer to Peredelkino’s story. The older Church of the Transfiguration, admired by Pasternak himself, stands alongside the newer Church of Igor of Chernigov, reminiscent of St. Basil’s Cathedral. And let’s not forget the Dom Tvorchestva, the House of Creativity. Built in 1955 as a literary residency, it fell into disrepair after the Soviet Union’s collapse but has since been revitalized. Today, it continues to serve as a gathering place for artists and writers, hosting workshops, fairs, and even classical music concerts. Peredelkino is more than just a place; it’s a living testament to a rich literary history.
