Have you ever wished you could step into a fairytale? Welcome to the Märchenbrunnen the Fountain of Fairytales in Berlin’s Volkspark Friedrichshain. This isn’t just a fountain it’s a portal to a world of magic and whimsy.

The Märchenbrunnen is more than just a pretty face. It’s a monumental work of Neo-Baroque style. It boasts a massive 34 by 54 meter fountain. This impressive structure features four cascading waterfalls. Nine smaller fountains add to the spectacle alongside seven water-spouting frogs. One frog is even designated as the Frog Prince.

This enchanting masterpiece was the brainchild of Ludwig Hoffmann a prominent Berlin city councilor and architect. Hoffmann envisioned a fountain showcasing fairy tales. This idea took shape in his memoirs. He collaborated with three talented sculptors from southern Germany. Ignatius Taschner Georg Wrba and Josef Rauch. Together they created an incredible 106 sculptures. These adorn the fountain and its surrounding areas.

Taschner’s sculptures are the heart of the Märchenbrunnen. Ten of them depict scenes from famous Brothers Grimm fairytales. You’ll find Hansel and Gretel Puss in Boots Hans in Luck The Seven Ravens Cinderella Little Red Riding Hood Brother and Sister Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty all frozen in stone. One fascinating detail is the two sculptures of Hansel and Gretel. They’re based on a lesser-known 1819 version of the story. In this version a duck helps the children escape.

Wrba also contributed significantly. He sculpted four Hermas figures representing an ogre a giant daughter Rübezahl and Old Mother Frost. These are tucked away in pathways. He also crafted six groups of children around the Dolphin Fountain.

But the artistry doesn’t stop there. Josef Rauch added 14 marble sculptures of game animals. These grace the fountain arcade. One intriguing legend claims one of Snow White’s seven dwarfs resembles the painter Adolph Menzel. This is said to be a silent protest against Kaiser Wilhelm II’s refusal to give Menzel a monument.

The Märchenbrunnen’s history is as rich as its imagery. The project began in 1901. It faced many hurdles including financial issues and disputes over artistic design. The grand opening finally took place on June 15 1913. The fountain suffered significant damage during World War II. Most of the sculptures vanished. They were later rediscovered in 1950. A long restoration process followed involving several phases. The most recent was a comprehensive project completed in 2007. Today this captivating fountain stands as a testament to German craftsmanship and artistry. A place where fairytales come to life. It remains a beloved attraction for generations. Enjoy the magic of the Märchenbrunnen.
