Have you ever considered how a simple eviction notice could lead to something greater? This is the story of Greater Works Baptist Church in Accra. It’s a story of faith, perseverance, and a testament to the power of believing in something bigger than yourself. Greater Works Baptist Church wasn’t always known by that name. It began as Achimota Baptist Church in 1984, in a humble classroom at Greenhill International School. Rev. John R. Gordy, a foreign missionary, along with three young Christians from Tesano Baptist Church, planted the seeds of this congregation. They probably never imagined the journey that lay ahead. After a couple of years, the church received an eviction notice from the school. This, coupled with a city-wide ban on churches meeting in public schools, presented a formidable challenge. Some members felt it was time to give up and return to Tesano Baptist Church. But two leaders, Louis Nortey and Patrick Amegavi, refused to let their faith waver. They believed God had a plan. Through divine guidance, they secured a space at Achimota’s Anglican Primary School, agreeing to renovate the classroom in exchange for a place to worship. Greater Works Baptist Church, still known as Achimota Baptist Church at the time, found a temporary home. The congregation continued to pray for a permanent place of worship. Leads appeared, but land disputes always seemed to block their path. Then, a former Greenhill teacher, the late Mr. Emmanuel Owusu, offered space at his Victory Preparatory School. They moved there in 1990. It was during this time that the church was renamed Greater Works Baptist Church, a fitting title considering the trials they had overcome. At Victory Preparatory School, the church finally found the land where they now stand. It was a long journey, filled with obstacles and uncertainties. But on Easter Sunday in 2006, they held their first service on this very site. The building was dedicated in 2020. Greater Works Baptist Church has not only grown its own congregation. It has also birthed other churches, including St. John’s, Messiah, Unity, and Winners Baptist Churches. Greater Works Baptist Church stands as a symbol of resilience and the unwavering power of faith. From a small classroom to a permanent sanctuary, their journey embodies the name they chose: Greater Works. It’s a reminder that even when faced with adversity, with faith, we can achieve greater things than we ever imagined.
