Built in 1897 the First Lutheran Church of Malden stands proudly. It’s one of Malden’s oldest continuously operating church structures. This beautiful building sits on the corner of Church and Waite Streets. Its history stretches back to the 1890s. A young Harvard student Jonas P Dahlin noticed the growing Swedish immigrant community. He began missionary work. This led to the formation of a Lutheran congregation on October 26 1893.
The First Lutheran Church of Malden wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a vital part of the community. Rev Carl Henderson was the first pastor. He oversaw the construction of the church building. The church building itself is a fascinating blend of architectural styles. American Gothic accents are noticeable. Victorian and colonial stylings reflect the neighborhood. The fieldstone foundation is a testament to its enduring presence. Inside the church’s warm hue creates a cozy atmosphere. Beautiful stained glass windows are a highlight. They feature the names and dates of past benefactors. Ornate carvings adorn the pews.
Throughout its history the church has seen many changes. The church underwent a major renovation in 1983. A pipe organ was added. The church added a steeple. A new parsonage was purchased. The old parsonage became the Parish House. The church continues to evolve. In 2005 Rev Angela Freeman became the first female pastor. The church embraced its role as a welcoming and inclusive community. It became a “Reconciling in Christ” congregation welcoming people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
The First Lutheran Church of Malden is known for its vibrant musical life. Traditional hymns are central to its services. Contemporary selections are also featured. The music seamlessly blends between the piano and the organ. The Lucia Fest a Swedish tradition is a special annual event. It commemorates St Lucia a Christian martyr. The celebration includes a procession and singing of Christmas carols. Delicious Swedish baked goods are also a highlight.
The church remains deeply involved in the community. Rev Emily Hamilton and volunteers offer ashes at the Malden Center T stop on Ash Wednesday. Camp Uke a unique program teaches ukulele to children. Our Hands Knitting group knits items for those in need. The church supports many organizations including The Bread of Life Ascentria Care Alliance ELCA World Hunger and more. The First Lutheran Church of Malden continues its mission of faith service and community building. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community spirit. It stands as a beacon of hope and inclusivity in Malden.
