In the heart of Mühlenberg, a quiet path whispers a story of courage. Kurt-Willkomm-Weg. This unassuming street bears the name of a man who dared to resist the rising tide of Nazism in Hanover. Kurt Willkomm, a teacher and journalist, became the editor of the communist “Neue Arbeiter Zeitung” (New Workers’ Newspaper). He was a voice for the voiceless, a beacon of hope in a darkening world. The year 1933 marked a turning point. Hitler’s ascent to power cast a long shadow over Germany, silencing dissent and crushing opposition. Yet, Kurt Willkomm remained defiant. He worked tirelessly to reorganize the underground resistance of the KPD in Lower Saxony. Kurt-Willkomm-Weg stands as a testament to his bravery. He was arrested by the Gestapo on November 5, 1933. Eleven days later, he succumbed to the brutal torture inflicted upon him within the Gestapo headquarters. The official cause of death? A pulmonary embolism, a convenient lie to conceal the horrific truth. Kurt Willkomm’s body now rests in an honorary grave in Ricklingen City Cemetery. His memory, however, lives on, etched in the very streets of Hanover. The Kurt-Willkomm-Weg serves as a poignant reminder. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by ordinary people who stood against tyranny. It serves as a symbol of hope. It symbolizes the enduring power of resistance in the face of oppression. As you walk along Kurt-Willkomm-Weg, remember the man who gave it his name. Remember his courage, his unwavering spirit, and his commitment to a better world.
