“Another world’s entrance” some call it. Today we explore the mysterious appeal of 都城神社. It is one of Kyoto’s lesser-known Shinto shrines.

都城神社 offers a unique glimpse into Japan’s spiritual landscape. This shrine is not as famous as Fushimi Inari. However, it possesses a charm all its own. Even local taxi drivers might not know of its existence.

Nestled on Mount Ooiwa, 都城神社 derives its name from the mountain itself. The mountain has two large rocks. Locals revere the larger rock as the Ooiwa male deity. The smaller one is the Koiwa female deity. They are enshrined at 都城神社 as divine entities. Both are considered mountain gods. Legend says that the male and female deities nursed each other back to health. People now see them as gods of healing. They are especially known for aiding those with difficult-to-treat illnesses. Tuberculosis was a common concern. People often visited to pray for recovery.

A fire once swept through the area. This has obscured the shrine’s origins. This ambiguity adds to its mystical allure. Some believe it marks an ancient capital. Others suggest it is a power spot. Japanese ghost enthusiasts sometimes use it for games. These games are similar to using a Ouija board. Many reportedly get scared away.

One of the most famous features is the pair of stone torii gates. These gates were sculpted and donated by KoMoto Impression. KoMoto also has an art museum in Kyoto. These torii feature male and female deity images. The patterns have a Southeast Asian style. This gives a unique artistic touch.

Continuing past the torii, you can see damage from a 2018 typhoon. A red torii was snapped. It now lies on its side. The small KoMoto torii also suffered. A plaque with divine names leans against the broken base.

都城神社 has a desolate atmosphere because there are no dedicated managers. No residences exist within a few square kilometers. Locals maintain the shrine. They bring water and food as offerings. A tortoiseshell cat lives here. It is not afraid of people. You can often find it near the fortune slips or offering box. Cats are seen as divine messengers.

The shrine is hidden in a dense cedar forest. It is away from the well-trodden tourist paths. The approach resembles a gateway to another realm. A lesser-known shrine called Katura Kozu also enshrines Kamo Wake-ikazuchi. The deity is also the focus here. A thousand years ago, Emperor Sanjo ordered its construction. It was rebuilt in 1783 after being destroyed by fire. Despite its remote location, locals visit the shrine often. A YouTube video has increased its popularity. Most visitors are photographers.

The shrine is accessible by car. A gate prevents wild animals from wandering. The gate keeps them from going down the mountain. The cedar trees create a sense of enclosure. Sunlight filters through the dense canopy. The moss-covered path enhances the mystical ambiance.

Climbing the 150 steps rewards you with a balanced view. Stone lions frame the scene. The cedar forest adds depth. A sense of Japanese aesthetics emerges here. This includes mystery, elegance, and tranquility. Birdsongs fill the air. Sunlight creates dappled patterns. The air is filled with a solemn atmosphere.

Heavy snowfall protects the buildings. The main hall houses three shrines. These are Katura Kozu Shrine, Kifune Shrine, and Kumano Shrine. A photographer described the winter scenery as soul-stirring. Snow transforms the cedar forest. 都城神社 becomes a snowy wonderland.

Visiting 都城神社 is like stepping into a different world. Its hidden location and unique atmosphere set it apart. It makes it a must-see destination in Kyoto.
