Five golden domes gleam in the Frankfurt sun. This is the Georgioskirche a beacon of Byzantine architecture in the Westend district. Built on the site of a former Rothschild orangery this church holds a fascinating history.

The Georgioskirche wasn’t always this magnificent structure. Its story begins long after the First World War. The Greek Orthodox community in Frankfurt which had formed officially in 1947 needed a place to worship. The city offered the damaged orangery in Grüneburgpark. For almost a decade the community transformed the old building into a makeshift church. By 1959 it served as a temporary place of worship.

But time and decay took their toll. The old structure became unsafe. In the 1990s the decision was made. The temporary church was demolished. A new Georgioskirche would rise from its foundations. From 1996 to 1998 construction commenced on this new structure.

The result is a small but striking church. Its interior is richly adorned. Its beauty is captivating. It is the heart of the Greek Orthodox community in Frankfurt. It continues to serve as a spiritual home. This small church boasts an impressive history. The Georgioskirche stands as a testament to faith perseverance and architectural beauty in the heart of Frankfurt. This place of worship is more than just stones and mortar. It represents the enduring spirit of a community. It is a reminder that even from temporary beginnings a beautiful and enduring structure can emerge.
