The imposing obelisk piercing the sky. That’s St George’s Tron Church. A testament to Glasgow’s enduring spirit. Originally built in 1808 by William Stark. This wasn’t the first church on this spot. A much earlier church stood here in 1687. It was too small for the growing population.

St George’s Parish Church it was then called. A significant landmark in the bustling heart of Glasgow. It sits proudly on Buchanan Street Scotland’s busiest shopping street. A truly impressive presence. Imagine the throngs of shoppers passing by this magnificent building.

Thomas Chalmers a renowned leader of the evangelical movement. He served as minister here in 1815. This place has witnessed history unfold. Not just shopping but spiritual awakenings. A merger with the Tron St Anne congregation in 1940 gave it its current name St George’s Tron.

The church has seen changes. In 2007-2009 a major refurbishment took place. Restoring original features. Revealing structural weaknesses. The interior now is open and contemporary. Hosting even a café now. The Wild Olive Tree. A testament to its adaptability and relevance.

Rev Alastair Duncan now leads the congregation. He was appointed as a Transition Minister. He was formally inducted in 2020. The church remains active. It holds services throughout the week. A café operates within its walls. The church opens its doors seven days a week. It hosts events including lunchtime concerts. A hub of activity.

This wasn’t always the case. In 2012 the congregation under Rev William Philip left. They departed from the Church of Scotland. They moved to new premises on Bath Street. They continued as an independent congregation. The Tron Church. A story of both continuity and change.

Today St George’s Tron Church stands tall. It’s a beautiful symbol of faith. A vibrant community space. A testament to resilience. A captivating blend of old and new. More than just a church it’s a living part of Glasgow’s history. A place of worship. A place of community. A place of history.
