The largest wooden structure in Osaka Prefecture awaits. This is Dainenbutsuji Temple.

Before you stands Dainenbutsuji Temple a testament to the Yuzu Nenbutsu sect. Founded in the late Heian period by Monk Ryorin this temple holds a unique place in Japanese Buddhist history. Ryorin after a vision of Amidanyorai developed the Yuzu Nenbutsu sect. He received support from Emperor Toba. This led to the construction of Dainenbutsuji Temple in Osaka’s Hirano ward.

The temple’s hondo completed in 1938 is a marvel of size and craftsmanship. It is 50 meters wide and 40 meters long. Inside you’ll find a painting of Jyuichisontentokunyorai. This painting is part of a special end-of-year Okaizai ceremony. Monks take the painting to followers’ homes for chanting and service. Only the Yuzu Nenbutsu sect performs this unique Okaizai.

The Reimeiden enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu and Emperor Toba. Legend says Tokugawa prayed here before and after the Siege of Osaka. He thanked the temple for his victory. In return the head priest asked for a license to spread the Yuzu Nenbutsu teachings.

Dainenbutsuji Temple also holds a spooky secret. A treasure storage house contains twelve scrolls depicting Japanese ghosts. The origins of these scrolls are mysterious. One scroll features a piece of cloth. Legend claims it belonged to a ghost who found peace thanks to prayers at the temple.

The temple’s annual Manbu Oneri ritual is another highlight. Inspired by Taima-ji Temple’s ritual it features monks dressed as 25 bosatsu. They walk a high bridge around the hondo. The ritual commemorates the 25 bosatsu that appear when someone dies. The ritual is held every year from May 1st to 5th.

Dainenbutsuji Temple is more than just a place of worship. It is a living history a place where faith tradition and legend intertwine. It is a place that has survived fire and war. It is a place that continues to thrive. A place well worth exploring.
