“Lost in the river of years” is what one explorer called the search for today’s point of interest. Welcome to the tale of the mysterious Machiol River in Shenzhen.

The Machiol River is a stream near Haichong Cape on the Dapeng Peninsula in Shenzhen. It originates between the peaks of Dawengding and Sanjiao Mountain. On the other side of this mountain is the Yangmeikeng River.

This river valley boasts a unique beauty that combines mountains and sea. The river also offers a glimpse into local legends. Let’s uncover its stories.

One prominent story revolves around Machiol Village. It is said that before 1957 there were 21 households with 76 people. By 1969 only five households remained. One night these last 26 villagers allegedly sailed to Hong Kong. This left Machiol Village abandoned.

Back then Hong Kong thrived under British rule. It was said that going to Hong Kong offered better jobs and living conditions than Shenzhen. This led to the mass migration from Machiol Village.

Another event marks the river’s history. In 2002 two hikers camping near the Machiol River were swept away by a flash flood. This tragic event led to a decade-long ban on climbing Qiniang Mountain.

The Machiol River got its name because it was a place where horses grazed. The surrounding grasslands were lush. A small river flowed nearby. “Machiol” refers to horse feed.

Exploring the Machiol River involves traversing a narrow stream. The further upstream you go the more beautiful it becomes. Waterfalls are a common sight. The village itself features stone walls built by human hands.

The Machiol River flows quietly through the village center. Farmland lines both banks but houses are hidden by dense woods. It’s a landscape that evokes tranquility and a sense of wonder.

It’s hard to imagine such a beautiful place hidden deep in the mountains. Before people lived here they certainly had challenges. Imagine trying to make a home on the side of a mountain. It makes you wonder how they made a living. Rice could not be grown here. There were probably few economic crops. Villagers likely fished at sea and carried rice up the mountain.

As you move upstream the river narrows. The waterway becomes smaller. The path leads deeper into the mountains. Walking the Machiol River can feel endless.

Darkness approaches and the forest thickens. Memories of the 2002 tragedy stir unease. The dense woods feel ominous. The fear is palpable. It is best not to linger.

The Machiol River is intertwined with the story of a village. The village is a reminder of times gone by. It is a testament to human resilience. The river and its surroundings offer an immersive experience. They blend natural beauty with historical intrigue.
