Landing in Madrid, one might not immediately think of “Four Winds”. But right here, at Cuatro Vientos Airport, that’s exactly what you’ll find. Cuatro Vientos, the oldest airport in Spain, holds over a century of captivating stories. Established in 1911, it stands as a testament to the pioneering days of aviation, a historical counterpoint to the bustling Madrid–Barajas Airport.

Cuatro Vientos isn’t just an airport; it’s a living museum. Imagine, in 1911, soldiers arriving, setting up camp in tents, their officers finding shelter in makeshift cabins. Picture the arrival of those first aircraft, housed in mobile hangars brought all the way from France: two Henri Farman biplanes and a Maurice Farman. These early aircraft marked the humble beginnings of Cuatro Vientos, a place where the dream of flight took its first, tentative steps in Spain.

In 1914, the iconic control tower, the oldest in Spain, began its rise. Years later, in 1918, the Aerodynamics Laboratory followed. In 1926, its state-of-the-art aerodynamic tunnel became operational, a hub of innovation in its time. Cuatro Vientos played a pivotal role in shaping Spanish aviation. It housed the Mechanics School from 1920 and even hosted the Classification School before it moved to Guadalajara. By 1936, Cuatro Vientos had evolved from a military airbase into a fully functioning civilian airport, an alternative to Barajas, open for national and international flights.

But Cuatro Vientos has witnessed more than just peaceful takeoffs and landings. During the Spanish Civil War, it served as a base for republican fighter and bomber squadrons, a stark reminder of the tumultuous times it lived through. After the war, the airport continued to evolve. The Section of Studies and Experiences, later absorbed into the National Institute of Technical Aerospace, found its home here. The Advanced Aerotechnical School transformed, first into the Military Academy of Aeronautical Engineers and later into the Transmission School.

The airport shares its airspace with a rich tapestry of institutions. The Royal Flying Club of Spain, located on adjacent land, has shared the runway with Cuatro Vientos since the 1950s. Today, Cuatro Vientos houses not only general aviation aircraft and flying clubs but also serves as a base for Spanish Police aircraft and traffic surveillance helicopters. It even hosts the Museum of Aeronautics and Astronautics, adding another layer of historical significance to this already fascinating location. So, as you stand here, at Cuatro Vientos, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet. It’s a place where the past takes flight.
