“Have you seen the Four Brothers?” A seasoned guide asked me. I had been in the Galapagos Islands for a week, soaking in the wonders of this unique ecosystem. I still hadn’t seen the Islote Cuatro Hermanos Este. The guide smiled, “Many haven’t.” He pointed to a small group of volcanic rock formations on the horizon, emerging from the turquoise waters off the coast of Isabela Island.

A collection of four uninhabited islets – Islote Cuatro Hermanos Este, Islote Cuatro Hermanos Sur, Islote Cuatro Hermanos Oeste, and Islote Cuatro Hermanos 2 – the archipelago is a spectacular sight. They are volcanic in origin, shaped like cones sculpted by the relentless waves of the Pacific Ocean. They are a sanctuary for seabird life, and you can see blue-footed boobies, masked boobies, frigates, and red-billed tropicbirds nesting on the rocky cliffs. They also provide a safe haven for a variety of marine life like hammerhead sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and sea lions.

The guide explained that the islands were once known as Crossman, a name bestowed upon them by the early explorers of the Galapagos. Since they are very sensitive to human disturbance, however, access is restricted to minimize interference. There are no beaches for landing, only rough, jagged rocks, and the only way to see the Islote Cuatro Hermanos Este is by boat.

The guide continued, “The waters surrounding the islets are teeming with life and attract divers and snorkelers from all over the world. It’s a paradise for underwater exploration, with coral reefs brimming with colorful fish, sea anemones, starfish, urchins, and a kaleidoscope of other marine life. The waters here are also a prime spot for diving in caves, where you can encounter a spectacular array of corals, sea fans and tropical fish playing hide and seek in the dim light.”

The guide had my full attention. “The Islote Cuatro Hermanos Este is an extraordinary place,” he said, “full of biodiversity and a sense of untouched natural beauty. But be warned, the currents here can be strong, and the visibility can also be limited. It requires experienced divers and you need to be respectful of the fragile marine environment.”

“This is a place where wildlife thrives,” he said, “a place where nature’s true beauty unfolds, a place where you can connect with wild creatures, making it a truly unique and unforgettable experience.” I smiled at the guide, my mind filled with images of these majestic, wild islets. There is so much to explore and discover in the Galapagos. And it’s a reminder that nature’s treasures are well worth preserving.
