Established in 2007 GEMS World Academy Dubai quickly became a prominent school. It was the first GEMS school to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum. It also achieved World School Status. Many initially doubted its success. The school was built in an underdeveloped area. It also had facilities considered ground-breaking but possibly unnecessary like the planetarium.
Today GEMS World Academy is a thriving international community. It has around 1850 students from over 85 nationalities. This makes it one of the most diverse schools in Dubai. The largest groups are from India Britain the Netherlands the UAE and the USA. There are almost 90 Emirati students. The school is co-educational with a balanced ratio of boys and girls.
In 2024 GEMS announced a major expansion. Senior students (Grades 9-12) will move to a neighboring building. This new campus will have state-of-the-art facilities. It will include a research center specialized classrooms and a center for sustainability. The new sports facilities include squash courts a four-court sports hall a 25m swimming pool and a fitness studio. Performing arts students will enjoy music practice rooms a recording studio an auditorium art rooms a theatre and a black box room. Ample parking will be provided along with a shuttle bus service connecting both campuses.
The expansion increases senior school capacity to 1176 students. The vision is to eventually accommodate up to 3300 students. The move benefits younger students. They will enjoy smaller class sizes and greater access to specialized facilities. These include spaces for food technology product design computer science and science labs.
Dr Saima Rana has played a key role in these developments. She joined in 2020 bringing extensive experience in international education. She previously served as Principal of Westminster Academy in London. She was later appointed Chief Education Officer overseeing all UAE GEMS schools. While her appointment initially caused some differences in opinion staff turnover decreased significantly to 15% well below the UAE average.
GEMS World Academy offers a comprehensive curriculum. It includes the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme Middle Years Programme Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme. It also offers a Language Institute with 14 mother tongue languages at no additional cost. Sustainability is a major focus. Environmentalism Innovation and Social Impact (EIS) is integrated across all grades.
The school is renowned for its extra-curricular activities. There are over 135 activities offered throughout the year. These include academic competitions music expressive arts sports talks presentations and clubs focused on mental health and wellbeing. The school also has a Week Without Walls programme for community service. This involves local or international opportunities. It fosters global citizenship.
GEMS World Academy’s commitment to excellence is evident in its academic achievements. The school consistently publishes its IB Diploma results. In 2023 87 students achieved an average score of 32.1 points with a 92% pass rate. The top student scored 42 points. The school’s success is a testament to its dedicated teachers its excellent facilities and its commitment to providing a world-class education. It is a truly exceptional institution.
